Martha Stewart and Her Career

You may easily associate Martha Stewart to glamour and extravagance owing to her huge success as an author, entrepreneur, and TV personality.Martha was not brought up in the city with the affluent. She was, in fact, raised and trained in the suburbs.

As a Daughter

Martha Helen, Kostyra was born in 1941 at New Jersey. Her father, Edward Kostyra, worked as apharmaceutical salesman while her mother, Martha Ruszowski, was a school teacher. Their family is of Polish-American descent.

Martha belonged to a busy household. Martha's rise in the business can be attributed to her parents' high regard to work ethics.She involved herself in the crafts at an early age. Eddie, Martha's father, is fond of gardening. He started sharing Martha his gardening skills when the latter was three. They love working in the yard, together.Martha was also active in other household chores. Her mother taught her to cook and sew. Martha gained knowledge on preservation and canning from her grandparents. She knew how to bake cakes and pies with the help of their baker neighbors.

As a Student

Martha gained straight As in her studies. She earned herself a partial scholarship at Barnard College in New York. She worked as a model in print and television advertisements to help provide for her educational expenses.Martha graduated in 1962, with a degree in European history and Architectural history. Martha’s life as a student can be used an example in writing essay about perseverance. 

Martha got married in 1961 to Andrew Stewart, also from Barnard College. In 1965, Martha gave birth to their daughter, Alexis.

As a careerwoman

Martha started her career as a stockbroker in New York. She performed well in the field despite the skepticism of employers and clients toward women workers. Martha and her husband later moved to Connecticut and renovated an 1805 farmhouse. Martha went into catering along with a college friend, Norma Collier, in 1976. They ran operations at the house basement. After 10 years, their company named “Uncatered Affair” developed to be a $1M business venture.

Martha bought the gourmet food store, Market Basket, which flourished under her management. She was famed for her expertise and in 1980's, Martha also delved into publishing. She came up with “Entertaining” together with co-writer Elizabeth Hawes. The cookbook, published in 1982, featured recipes and photos from parties Martha organized. It became a best-seller. It can be concluded as well that Martha is excellent in writing essay.

Opportunities kept coming for Martha. She published several other books, wrote for New York Times and even appeared on television programs such as “The Oprah Winfrey Show”. Martha soon founded the $200M enterprise, “Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia,” with concentration on merchandising, television and publishing.

Martha also had her share of downs. In 1990, she got divorced. She was also imprisoned for five months in 1994, allegedly for insider trading. Despite all that, she remained steadfast.Martha redeemed herself and was even more triumphant. She was recognized, four times, as one of the 50 Most Powerful Women by Fortune Magazine.

As a Role Model

Success stories such as Martha's have been told many times. Even so, Martha Stewart shall continue to be an inspiration, not just in  writing essay , but also in becoming a strong person amidst tough times.
